City of Heroes 2015
Il y a une semaine et demie se tenait le tournoi des City Heroes organisé par le Concordia Electronic Sports Association, ou CESA. Un tournoi haut en couleur qui s’est déroulé pratiquement au même endroit que le dernier tournoi de Super Smash Bros (vous pouvez même lire l’article sur ce tournoi ici!). Dans les 6 équipes présentes se tenait les équipes ETS Piranha, l’EsporTS Team B, la LQD, Team PlaceHolder, Team Renewal Desu et Endless 8. Un line-up avec beaucoup de potentiel et de talent! Le tournoi offrait une salle pour regarder les matchs ainsi qu’un livestream casté par les membres du CESA eux-mêmes. Dans la salle de jeu, où les joueurs jouaient ou attendaient, l’atmosphère était tendue. Les joueurs se préparaient mentalement pour les défis à venir ou, entre deux parties, allaient se détendre dans la salle de visionnement avec un peu de nourriture. La journée commençait et les promesses d’action étaient hautes.
Chaque équipe était présente pour ses propres objectifs. Certaines étaient présentes pour gagner, d’autres pour avoir du plaisir. La Team B, par exemple, faisait partie de cette seconde catégorie. Ils n’étaient pas venus pour avoir la première place puisque dans leur équipe se trouvait un de leur sub, ce qui les a forcés d’altérer la composition d’équipe et d’avoir des joueurs hors de leur zone de confort. Renewal Desu, eux, étaient là pour la première place et, heureusement pour eux, l’ont eu, mais nous y reviendrons plus tard. Durant la journée, les beaux coups se sont enfilés tandis que les parties et la journée avançaient. Peu de joueurs donc, mais beaucoup de talent.
Ils sont allés en mode YOLO en abandonnant tout espoir de gagner et en laissant un de leurs joueurs prendre Olaf…
Le haut point de la journée était définitivement les matchs et le combat final entre Renewal Desu et Endless 8. Renewal est une équipe plutôt jeune, formée il y a un an et composée d’amis et de connaissances. Armés d’un entrainement hebdomadaire de deux heures, ils sont entrés dans le tournoi avec la ferme intention de récolter la première place. Endless 8 (E8), quant à eux, ont formé et ont commencé à pratiquer ensemble quelques semaines seulement avant le tournoi. E8 nous ont confié que malgré quelques problèmes de communications, ils avaient un contrôle solide de leurs champions principaux.
Quand nous sommes arrivés le samedi matin, nous avons joué de chance puisque la première partie a laquelle nous avons assisté était, justement, la première partie entre les deux champions! Renewal et E8 se sont entrechoqués et c’est Renewal qui s’est hissé hors de la mêlée. Un présage des combats à venir? Peu importe, après la partie, nous sommes allés voir l’équipe gagnante pour avoir leur opinion sur ce qui s’était passé. Ils nous ont dit qu’ils étaient entrés dans la partie avec beaucoup d’appréhension parce que ce n’était pas leur première rencontre avec E8, mais, ce matin-là, c’était leur première victoire.
Forts de leur score de 4-1 et de leur victoire contre E8, les joueurs de Renewal sont entrés dans la finale de manière un peu chambranlante. Ils ont remporté la première victoire, mais le stress était vraiment présent et leur capacité d’exécution en a souffert. Renewal a repris de sa confiance dans la seconde partie, mais E8 ne s’est pas laissé faire et a remporté la game 2. Pour la troisième partie, on aurait pu croire que la tension aurait été à son comble et pourtant, Renewal a décidé d’aller dans la direction complètement opposée! Ils sont allés en mode YOLO en abandonnant tout espoir de gagner et en laissant un de leurs joueurs prendre Olaf, bien qu’il ne fasse pas partie de leur rotation habituelle! Alors que la partie avançait, le stress montait d’autant parce que les joueurs de Renewal se sont bien rendu compte qu’ils avaient l’avantage! Finalement, ils ont su capitaliser sur la nouveauté de représentait Olaf et on remporté la game 3 et, du coup, le tournoi au complet.
Les deux finalistes ont échangé une bonne poignée de main et la team Renewal Desu est partie après quelques photos, un chèque dans les mains et, on l’imagine sans peine, un sourire aux lèvres. Si vous voulez revoir les City Heroes, la plupart seront au LAN ETS cette fin de semaine! Avec un peu de chance, on verra peut-être Endless 8 prendre leur revanche sur Renewal Desu! Mais pour le savoir, il va falloir y aller!

It’s been a week and a half since the City Heroes tournament held by Concordia Electronic Sports Association, otherwise known as CESA. A tournament of brilliant colour that was held at the same location as their last tournament of Super Smash Bros. (You can even read the article about that tournament here!) The 6 teams participating included ETS Piranha, l’EsporTS Team B, la LQD, Team PlaceHolder, Team Renewal Desu and Endless 8. A line up with immense potential and talent! The tournament offered a room for spectating the games as well as a live stream casted by members of CESA themselves. In the game room, where the players were waiting or playing, the atmosphere was tense. The players were mentally preparing themselves for the challenges ahead, or between two matches, would go unwind in the viewing room with a little food. The day began and the promise of action was high.
Each team was presented to its own objectives. Some were there to win, others just to have some fun. Team B, for example, was in the second category. They did not come to win first place, especially since one of their players was a sub, which forced them to alter their lineup and have their players completely out of their comfort zone. Renewal Desu, they were in it to win it, and fortunately for them, they did, but we’ll get to that later. The good plays followed one after another, while the games and the day went by. So few players, but what was lacking in numbers was weighed out by talent.
They took on the YOLO mentality, completely abandoning all hope of winning and even allowed one of their players to play Olaf…
The high points of the day were definitely the matches and final battle between Desu Renewal and Endless 8. Renewal is a fairly young team, comprised of friends and acquaintances this past year. Armed with weekly two-hour training, they entered the tournament with the intention of winning first place. Endless 8 (E8), meanwhile, had only formed and began practicing weeks before the tournament. E8 had told us that despite some communication problems, they had a strong control of their principal champions.
When we arrived Saturday morning, we really got lucky because the first party we assisted was, amazingly, the first party between the two champions. Renewal and E8 rattled it out and it was Renewal who won the game. An omen for the fights to come? Regardless, after the game, we went to see the winning team to ask their opinion of what happened. They said they had entered the game with a lot of apprehensions because it was not their first encounter with E8, but that morning, it was their first victory.
With their 4-1 victory against E8, the members of Renewal entered in the finale seeming a little shaky. They had won their first victory, but the stress was present and their ability to execute suffered. Renewal regained their confidence in the second half but E8 did not let them gain an advantage and won game 2. For the third game, one could cut the tension in the room with a butter knife, and Renewal decided to go in a completely different direction! They took on the YOLO mentality, completely abandoning all hope of winning and even allowed one of their players to play Olaf, though it is not part of their normal rotation. As the match went on, the stress level raised because Renewal had become aware that they had gained the advantage. Finally, they were able to capitalize on the novelty of Olaf and they won game 3, as well as the tournament.
The two finalists exchanged a firm handshake and Renewal Desu left after a few photos, a cheque in their hands and, as is hard to deny, a smile stretched across their faces. If you want to see the City Heroes again, most of them will be at LAN ETS this weekend! With some chance, we might see Endless 8 get revenge against Renewal Desu! But to see if that will actually happens, you’ll have to go check it out!
