MTL Comiccon – Super Smash Bros. Wii U

MTL Comiccon – Super Smash Bros. Wii U

For the second year running, the Montreal ComicCon hosted a Super Smash Bros. tournament at the Palais des Congrès, with SSBMontreal running the event once again. This year, the featured titled was Super Smash Bros. WiiU in the eSports room at the convention, and ran right beside the Montreal Pokémon League.

It’s over 50 Smash players from all over Montreal and Quebec City who took to the tournament for the title of ComicCon Champion and a share of the $500 prize pool attached to it. At the end of it all, SuperGirlKels took the title with a 3-2 win over Venom, having forced a rematch.

Earlier that day, Venom and SuperGirlKels, teammates at HoH, faced one another in the winner’s final, with the former taking the win to send SuperGirlKels to the losers bracket. There she squared off against KingKong who had just taken measure of Z, a player that had much to prove after last year’s event. SuperGirlKels took the set in a convincing fashion with a swift 3-0 sweep to get to the final, and followed through with a close 3-2 win against Venom in the final to set up the fated rematch.

The second set marked a change of pace as SuperGirlKels returned to her main character, Sonic. Every game was close in damage and stock, but as everyone knows, you cannot underestimate SuperGirlKels’ speedster. With Sonic at 80% damage taken, Ryu at 90%, either player could have closed out the game earlier or it wasn’t until the very end that SuperGirlKels’ Sonic would find a weak spot in Venom’s armor and up-smash Ryu to win the grand finals.

After the tournament, we caught up with Venom to discuss the event. He stated, “This tournament was all about analyzing and adapting. I was forced to agro a lot”. Having lost out in the finals, Venom has not yet declared himself defeated and is already preparing for the next event. Before leaving he stated, “I’ll be focusing on replays. I might try Megaman to play against Sonic”.
