QI Challenge 2015
Le Quartier de l’Innovation organisait la première édition de leur QI challenge, un microfestival du jeu et du eSport projeté en extérieur! Situé aux angles de Peel et Notre-Dame, un village s’est organisé dans le stationnement du Planétarium, équipé avec une scène couverte, une dizaine de kiosques et, bien entendu, les indispensables food trucks. Une demi-douzaine de studios indépendants de Montréal s’étaient réunis pour faire découvrir leur jeu et y faire jouer sur grand écran durant la première soirée du Challenge. La seconde soirée, elle, était réservée à l’eSports et la scène a été offerte toute grande au club eSports de l’ETS ainsi qu’au CESA, le Concordia eSports Student Association.
Quand on mentionne grand écran, c’est important de faire une distinction entre ce qui est communément considéré comme un grand écran et ce qui était disponible au QI Challenge. Un grand écran normal, c’est du 55 pouces et plus jusqu’à l’écran de cinéma. Le quartier de l’innovation portait bien son nom la semaine dernière puisqu’ils ont décidé d’aller 2 ou 3 échelons au-dessus de la norme en projetant la compétition de League of Legends sur le mur de l’ex-brasserie Dow, un bâtiment pratiquement aussi haut que l’ETS. Par souci de simplicité, ils ont aussi projeté la compétition sur l’écran blanc derrière les joueurs. Heureusement qu’ils ont pensé à le faire d’ailleurs, puisqu’au début de la soirée, il faisait encore trop clair dehors pour pouvoir voir le match adéquatement.

En ce qui a trait aux matchs de League of Legends, c’étaient des belles parties, mais, malheureusement, très unidirectionnelles en faveur de l’ETS. L’équipe de Concordia s’est vaillamment battue, mais l’ensemble de l’équipe habituelle n’était pas présent et des subs ont dû monter au créneau pour remplacer les joueurs manquants. Malheureusement, dans les situations de stress élevé comme celle-ci, la coordination des subs et du reste de l’équipe est souvent mise à rude épreuve. Bien entendu, le match et les victoires se sont déroulés dans le respect et nous n’avons aucun doute que la flamme de la rivalité ne brûle que plus fort depuis jeudi dernier. La prochaine rencontre n’en sera que plus féroce!
En conclusion, l’équipe de Montréal Gaming a passé une belle soirée! Des bons matches de LoL, des joueurs endiablés, une ambiance festive, c’est tout ce que ça prend! Gros shout-out aux caster de l’ETS qui ont fait un excellent travail de commenter les parties et aux studios indies pour avoir animé les entractes! Les seuls points négatifs étaient le froid (on n’était pas assez habillés) et la délicieuse odeur de poutine du Smoking BBQ qui flottait dans l’air, terriblement aguicheuse. On a bien hâte a l’année prochaine 😀

QI Challenge 2015
The Quartier de l’Innovation organized the first edition of the QI Challenge, a micro-festival of gaming and eSports projected outside! Located on the angle of Peel and Saint-Catherine, a village built itself right in the parking of the Dow Planetarium, complete with a covered stage, about 10 kiosks and, of course, the essential foodtrucks. Several indie game studios from Montreal gathered there to showcase and play their games with the visitors on the big screen during the first night of the Challenge. The second night was totally dedicated to eSports and the stage belonged to the ETS eSports club and the CESA, the Concordia eSports Student Association.
You know, when we talk about big screen here, there has to be a distinction to make between what is commonly accepted to be a big screen in general (maybe 55 inches to a cinema screen) and what passes for a “big screen” at the QI. They really went the extra mile during the Challenge and totally deserved the “Innovation” part of their name because the whole League of Legends competition was projected on the wall of the Dow ex-brewery, a building about as tall as the ETS! It was truly something to behold. Of course, it was also projected on the white wall behind the players, because of the ambiant light around 8pm making it hard to see what was going on.
They really went the extra mile during the Challenge and totally deserved the “Innovation” part of their name…
About the League of Legends games themselves, they were nice but, unfortunately, they really only went in the direction of the ETS team. The Concordia team fought valiantly but the usual lineup wasn’t there and subs had to take the missing players place for the match. Of course, during high-stress situations like these, the teamwork has to be really tight, and having subs in the team sometimes break that teamwork and coordination. Of course, the whole competition was done in total respect and we have no doubt that the flames of rivalry only burns brighter and that the next meeting of the two team will only be that much more awesome!
To conclude, the Montreal Gaming team had a really nice time over there! Good LoL games, great players, an amazing atmosphere, it’s all we need! We gotta give out a big shout-out to the ETS casters that did a superb job at commentating the games and to all the game studios present, to entertain us during the breaks! If we had anything negative to say, it would be the frisky Montreal weather (we weren’t covered enough) and the deliciously teasing smell of the Smoking BBQ, floating in the air. We can’t wait for next year!
