Dreamhack Montreal 2018 – Smash 4

Dreamhack Montreal 2018 – Smash 4

The Olympic Stadium was the home of this year’s Dreamhack Montreal 2018. With such a grand venue, the stage was set for amazing Smash Bros. action; With some of the best players from all around Canada and some international talents from the United States making up the 218 player bracket. The tournament was so dense with incredible competitors that it was almost impossible to place bets on a winner. Given the large amount of diversity in regions, the audience was treated with some improbable match-ups that would be seen here at the first time; Captain Zack vs Venom, Larry Lurr vs Deathorse, Fwed vs Esam just to name a few of these stunning clashes of never before seen dream matches.

With some top level talent scattered all across the bracket, even the pools were stacked with high profile matches. While most of the expected top players would advance in their pools with strong victories, the biggest upset of the day would undoubtedly go to Stas’ Ryu who took a 2-0 victory over Anti. A relatively unknown player from the Ontario region taking a set over a player who is currently ranked top 20 in the world had everyone’s jaws hitting the floor and quickly became the conversation all over the stadium. Montreal’s own SuperGirlKels would also pick up 2 big wins against Esam and Captain Zack, beating them both for the first time to put herself in top 8 winner’s side; doing her region proud. Mistake, the current best player in Canada who was the favorite to win the entire event, would actually take a 3-1 loss to Ally, the previous best player in Canada, overcoming a very difficult match up of Mario vs Bayonetta to put himself into top 8.

Top 8:

As history has shown time and time again, Ally always performs incredibly when he’s on home turf. His run would continue with a clean 3-0 victory over MVD to place himself in winner’s finals along with Larry lurry who would also triumph with a 3-0 over SuperGirlKels. His patience and ability to lock down Sonic’s options with his Fox was too much for Kels to handle. On the loser’s side we would see Captain Zack, who for the majority of the tournament had been playing his secondary Peach to great effectiveness, taking on Anti who made a huge loser’s run after the upset he faced in pools. The Peach did well enough to get him a game, but when Zack had his back against the wall after being down 2-1, we would see him return to his tried and true main Bayonetta, which would overwhelm Anti and tip the scale to end the set 3-2 for Zack. Esam would once again show his proficiency in the Bayonetta match-up with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mistake. With the top seed eliminated, the winner was anyone’s guess at this point. Esam would have an epic rematch against SuperGirlKels, the player that sent him to loser’s in the first place. Esam had a strong counterpick with his Samus to zone out Kel’s Sonic with a flood of projectiles. His charge shots in particular just ripped her stocks away. Esam would put himself in loser’s semi where he would meet his longtime friend and static doubles partner MVD after the Diddy Kong main scored a 3-0 win over Captain Zack’s Peach and even his Bayonetta. The 2 buddies would have a friendly but intensely close set, not surprising as both have faced each other countless times and know each and every set up they could possibly do to each other. The set would end in a game 5 last hit situation where MVD was able to sneak in a clutch back air to advance to loser’s finals.

Top 3

Winner’s finals would undoubtedly be the match of the night with two big time fan favorites: Ally vs Larry Lurr. Of course, the crowd was firmly behind their hometown hero Ally to take the win, but after being down 2 games to strong pressure from Larry Lurr, it seemed as though his Fox had the set in the bag. However, the crowd would not give up, and cheers of “ALLY!” filled the stadium. We would see the resiliency of Ally as his legendary defensive play would show that there was no wasted movement as he methodically looked for an opening and when the time was right would fight back with huge combos that had the crowd jumping out of their seats. Ally would bring it back to a game 5 situation where these 2 Smash titans clashed blow for blow.  And even though the Mario expert had a sizable lead and the roars of the crowd behind him, Larry Lurr would clutch it out with a well timed down-air to up Smash to take down Ally by the skin of his teeth to put himself in grand finals.

MVD would have his rematch against Ally but at that point Ally was still on fire from his winner’s finals match that he made short work of MVD with a 3-1 victory.

The Grand finals rematch would be bittersweet, as Larry Lurr would assert complete dominance, wanting to end the set as quickly as possible as to not have Ally make the comeback like he had in winner’s finals. With some clean footsies and relentless combo strings, Larry Lurr would triumph with a 3-0 victory to take the Smash for WiiU Singles tournament at Dreamhack 2018.
