En dépit de la tempête de neige le 20 Février, la communauté Smash de Montréal a pu se réchauffer avec le Winter Forge, le premier tournoi de Super Smash Bros. Ultimate organisé par Montreal Gaming. Avec des compétiteurs talentueux, une production de qualité, des commentateurs expérimentés; des cadeaux et des concours pour le public, le succès de cet évènement était garanti.
L’évènement a débuté avec un chaleureux accueil de la part des commentateurs, Hermit et River, bien connu par la communauté Smash Ultimate au Québec. Ils nous annonçaient très rapidement que le tournoi, composé de 10 joueurs, était de haut niveau, avec 6 participants faisant parti du Power Ranking de leur région. Une annonce qui allait s’avérer vrai dès la première partie, entre Pacha et Saloum, un match qui avait des allures de grande finale. Pacha, utilisant Palutena, sortirait au sommet avec une victoire, mais assurément pas la victoire la plus importante de la soirée puisque peu de temps après, il causa une autre upsetbattant la 1ère tête de série, Smokk (3-1) pour se hisser dans la finale des vainqueurs.
Dans la partie opposée du tableau, on a aussi eu droit à quelques surprises, avec HandBallNat, qui préconise ROB, battant Z de manière convaincante (3-0). Suivant cette victoire, Nat faisait face à un autre gros défi dans la demi-finale en se mesurant contre LaGrimace. Ce fut un bon départ pour Nat, qui jouait son personnage principal contre Grimace qui était sur Jigglypuff, alors qu’il est connu pour ses Mr. Game & Watch et Inkling. La joie était de courte durée pour Nat alors que LaGrimace exécuta un combo devastateur suivi d’un rest pour prendre les devants 1-0 dans la série. Nat remporta les deux manches suivantes aisément avant que LaGrimace décide de changer de personnage pour sortir son arme de prédilection, Mr.Game & Watch. En dépit de ses meilleurs efforts, Grimace était simplement trop fort et remporta la série 3-2 avec 5 secondes restant au cadrant.
La finale des vainqueurs opposait donc Pacha et LaGrimace. Une première finale qui nous réservait une surprise de taille quand Pacha décida de laisser son choix de personnage à un choix aléatoire. Malheureusement pour lui, son manque de familiarité avec les personnages autres que Palutena lui firent plus de mal que de bien, un déficit que prit avantage LaGrimace, gagnant 3-0 pour se hisser dans la grande finale.
La finale des perdants se jouerait entre Pacha et Smokk, une finale qui était bien plus amusante que la finale d’avant. En effet, les deux joueurs se portaient au jeu de Pacha, allant d’un choix aléatoire de personnages d’une part et d’autre. Smokk, étant un joueur beaucoup plus complet, ne semblait pas trop déplacé. Son talent et ses compétences dans les bases fondamentales de jeu ne firent qu’une bouchée de Pacha, remportant la partie 3-0.
La scène était mise pour la première grande finale du Winter Forge. Une finale qui opposerait Smokk, le meilleur joueur de Smash de Montréal et LaGrimace, la révélation de l’année dernière au Québec. Smokk devait aussi remporter 2 séries pour être couronné, le tournoi étant à élimination double. Dans la première série, que Smokk remporta aisément 3-0, on vit LaGrimace expérimenter avec plusieurs personnages, la première partie avec son Mr.Game & Watch fétiche, était suivi par une partie de ROB et d’un rare choix de Min Min. Autre que Mr. Game & Watch, les choix n’étaient pas de taille contre Smokk qui força une dernière série pour déterminer le grand champion de ce tournoi.
LaGrimace décida de rester sur Mr.Game & Watch pour le reste de la série, avec Smokk restant sur son Roy de prédilection. Bien que ces deux joueurs se sont mesurés l’un à l’autre plein de fois, on a eu droit à une partie de grande classe. Le Mr. Game & Watch prouva être trop fort cette journée pour Smokk, et LaGrimace réussi à l’emporter 3-1 sur son rival pour être couronné champion du premier Winter Forge.

Despite the harsh Montreal blizzard that took place during the weekend of February 20th, Smash players were able to take refuge with the Winter Forge, Montreal Gaming’s first Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament. With amazing competitors, casters and production quality that have come to be expected from Montreal Gaming; sprinkled with a few giveaways and contests for good measure!
The event opened up with a warm welcome from the most prominent and recognizable Smash Ultimate commentators in Quebec: Hermit and River. Dressed for success, they announced that the 10 player bracket was of a high level of quality, as 6 of the participants are currently in their respective regions’ Power Ranking, making this event akin to an invitational event held for the best of the best. A statement that was perfectly echoed right from the first match on stream between Pacha and Saloum; a matchup worthy of a Grand Final occurring in the first round in the Winners Bracket. Pacha, with his Palutena, would come out on top with a big win, but certainly not the biggest of the night; following that set he would take an impressive upset victory over the number 1 ranked player in Montreal, the 1st seed in the bracket, Smokk (3-1) to put himself in Winner’s Finals.
On the opposite end of the winner’s bracket, we would also see some unexpected results, with ROB player HandBallNat taking a decisive win off of Z (3-0). With this huge success under his belt, Nat looked to carry this momentum going into Winner’s Semis against expert Game & Watch and Inkling main, LaGrimace. It looked to be a strong start, especially with Grimace’s questionable choice to start the set with Jigglypuff; a character rarely used by him. However, regardless of the massive lead by Nat, a brilliant combo strung into a devastating Jigglypuff rest by Grimace won him not only the game but the praise of everyone watching. After Nat won the two following games, Grimace would switch to his tried and true character of choice, Mr. Game & Watch. Despite going to game 5 and a valiant effort by HandBallNat, Grimace would take the victory (3-2) in the last hit scramble with only 5 seconds left on the clock.
Even among their countless encounters over many tournaments, the Winter Forge Winner’s Finals between Pacha and LaGrimace would prove to be a fun and unusual matchup. Pacha opted to let fate decide his games, leaving the randomizer to select his character. These shenanigans would unfortunately not pay off for the Palutena player, as the unfamiliarity of the randomized characters did not adequately prepare him for a match against a player of LaGrimace’s caliber, who swiftly sent him into the loser’s bracket (3-0) and moved on to Grand Finals himself.
The Winter Forge Loser’s Finals would see the same shenanigans with Smokk, who climbed all the way into the Loser’s Finals, partaking in Pacha’s random character showdown. Smokk being a jack of all trades when it comes to Smash Bros, is able to seamlessly pick up any character and make it look as if he’s played them his entire life. His raw talent and proficiency in the game’s fundamentals were on full display as he eliminated Pacha (3-0).
The stage was set for the grand finals of the inaugural Montreal Gaming: Winter Forge between LaGrimace and Smokk. Coming from the Loser’s Final, Smokk would have to win 2 sets to be crowned the champion. With this in mind, after Grimace lost game 1 with his signature Game & Watch, he took the opportunity to experiment among different characters, with the likes of ROB making an appearance and a pleasantly surprising effort from the rarely seen Min Min. Though, it would prove to not be enough as Smokk would win the set (3-0) and force the bracket into its final grand finals set. Grimace would now commit to going the distance with his Game & Watch for the entire set to take on Smokk’s Roy whom he had been using all tournament long. While these two players have traded many sets in the past, this was still an incredible clash of Montreal’s best player, Smokk and the greatest success story of the Quebec scene in the last year in LaGrimace. That climb to the top certainly looks to continue for LaGrimace as the Game & Watch proved to be too much for Smokk on this day and would take the victory (3-1) and 1st place finish at the Winter Forge. Taking with him the prize money and the Gold Medal.
