Starcraft 2 @ DreamLAN 2014

Il y a 3 semaines, la première édition du DreamLAN battait son plein au centre Pierre-Charbonneau. Montréal Gaming a évidemment suivi avec beaucoup d’attention tous les tournois disputés, voici donc le résumé de l’aventure Starcraft 2 au DreamLAN 2014!

Avec l’arrivée prochaine du troisième et dernier volet de la trilogie, Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void, plusieurs yeux étaient tournés vers ce tournoi et tous étaient impatients de voir si la communauté allait faire acte de présence. C’est finalement un total de 32 joueurs de niveaux variés qui ont confirmé leur inscription samedi matin. Plusieurs clans de grande envergure étaient d’ailleurs représentés dans le tournoi, dont Team Ascension, Team Gravity, sans oublier Boreal eSports.

Samedi, 15 novembre.

Le tournoi de Starcraft fut l’un des seuls à commencer à l’heure prévue. La phase de groupe fut expéditive et sans grande surprise. Un format bien calculé a permis à l’organisateur du tournoi de n’éliminer aucun joueur après la phase de groupe, ce qui a été bien apprécié par les joueurs venant de ligues plus faibles: Ils ont tous eu la chance de participer au tournoi principal, ce qui est rarement possible dans un LAN party aussi gros.

Les joueurs favoris ont pu profiter d’une pause dès le début du tournoi, ayant été envoyés directement au Round of 16. Jig, de la Team Gravity, devint la première surprise en tombant aux mains de NeXa, un jeune joueur de 16 ans qui n’a pas tardé à démontrer son énorme potentiel. Heureusement, il restait à Jig et aux autres joueurs le loser bracket pour tenter d’atteindre le Top 6, qui garantissait une bourse en argent.

Au terme d’une journée éreintante, à 20h00, ils n’étaient plus que 12.

Dimanche, 16 novembre.

C’est dans un mélange d’odeurs de boissons énergisantes et de grilled cheese que les joueurs ont repris l’action dimanche matin. Nous n’avons pas tardé à savoir qui allait faire partie du Top 6. Jig semblait en bien meilleure forme que la veille: il était rouillé, mais clairement capable de revenir du loser bracket. Un joueur du nom de MechMaster était en train de faire sa marque dans le tournoi avec – vous l’aurez deviné – un contrôle impeccable des unités mech Terran. NeXa, ofx, Mammouth, Sottorks, MikeRoss et Tiger étaient également toujours dans la course.

La finale débuta plus tard que prévu et dû malheureusement être légèrement raccourcie pour répondre aux délais limités du LAN. Jig parvint à se hisser en grande finale contre MechMaster, qui après avoir roulé sur tous ses adversaires au cours du tournoi, dû s’avouer vaincu. Par la marque combinée de 5-1, Jig mit la main sur le titre et est devint le premier champion de Starcraft 2 de l’histoire du DreamLAN.

En conclusion, le tournoi de Starcraft 2 du DreamLAN fut définitivement une réussite. Il ne fait nul doute que cette communauté est toujours bien vivante et active. Voilà qui est prometteur pour le prochain grand LAN Montréalais, le LanETS 2015 !

It’s been three weeks since the first edition of DreamLAN took place at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre, and Montreal Gaming was obviously up front and center to observe all the tournaments. So without further ado, here’s a recap of Starcraft 2 at DreamLAN 2014!

With the upcoming release of the third and final part of the trilogy, Starcraft 2: Legacy of the void, many spectators were at the tournament, and all were eager to see if the community was going to make an appearance. There was ultimately a total of 32 players, all of different levels, that had confirmed their registration on Saturday morning. There were several major groups participating in the tournament, including Ascension Team, Team Gravity and Boreal eSports, to name a few.

Saturday, November 15^th

The Starcraft tournament was one of the few of the tournaments to start on time. The pool play was unsurprisingly swift, and a well calculated size allowed organizers not to eliminate any player after the pool play , which was very well appreciated by players from lower leagues. Everyone had the equal chance to participate in the main tournaments, which is seldom possible for a LAN party of that size.

The favorite players were able to take a break at the start of the tournament, having being sent directly to round 16. Jig, of Team Gravity, was the first to be caught off guard by falling at the hands of Nexa, a 16 year old player who was quick to demonstrate his huge potential. Luckily, Jig and other players had their chance in the losers’ bracket to try to reach the top 6, which had a guaranteed cash prize.

Only 12 were left by 8 PM.

After an exhausting day ending at 8pm, there were only 12 players left.

Sunday, November 16^th

There was a mix of energy drinks and grilled cheese in the air. We had no clue as to who would soon be part of the Top 6. Jig appeared to be in better shap0e than the day before. It was rocky, but he was able to resurrect himself from the losers’ bracket. Another player, named MechMaster, was busy making his mark on the tournament with- You guessed it- a perfect control of the Terran Mech units. Nexa, OFX, Mammoth Sottorks, MikeRoss and Tiger were all also still in the running.

The finals started later than expected and, unfortunately, had to be shortened slightly to meet the limited time frame of the LAN. Jig managed to claw his way into the grand finale against MechMaster, who after fending off all his opponents in the tournament, finally had to admit defeat. With a combined score of 5-1, Jig was able to put his hands on the title and become the first champion of Starcraft 2 in the History of DreamLAN.
