LAN ETS 2018: Overwatch
Pour la deuxième année consécutive, Lan ETS a organisé un tournoi Overwatch qui a eu lieu à la Place Bonaventure. Le tournoi a été un événement beaucoup plus petit que celui de l’année dernière et a eu une cagnotte de prix de 5,000$. Cette année, 24 équipes ont été réparties en 4 groupes, les deux meilleures équipes de chaque groupe se qualifiant pour les <best of 3> de double élimination. Tous les yeux étaient tournés vers les organisations montréalaises les plus grandes, comme l’équipe récemment acquise Grizzlys Overwatch, autrefois connue sous le nom de Rivals Gaming, Mirage Sport Electronique et Crysix. Les Grizzlys avaient récemment remporté la Montreal Overwatch League (MOL) et étaient favoris pour remporter la victoire avant le début du tournoi.
Les Grizzlys ont ensuite écrasé leur groupe et se sont retrouvés dans la catégorie des séries éliminatoires, affrontant d’abord Saints Gaming Overwatch, anciens adversaires des MOL qui tentaient de se frayer un chemin à travers la catégorie et d’obtenir une deuxième chance d’abattre les Grizzlys. De l’autre côté, nous avons vu des équipes fortes comme Uganda Trihard, qui comptait les meilleurs talents individuels du tournoi, tels que Roody, un joueur bien connu grâce à ses compétences en Pharah, et The Plug, un des 20 meilleurs joueurs du classement nord-américain. Les Grizzlys ont ensuite battu Saints Gaming afin de se qualifier pour les demi-finales, où ils affronteraient Team Status eSport, une équipe qui venait d’éliminer PsykoPaths Gaming. Pendant ce temps, Uganda Trihard prendrait un facile 2-0 contre Transcendence pour passer en demi-finale, contre Mirage.
Uganda Trihard était composé de membres des champions MOL de la saison 1 qui avaient, sans doute, un champ de compétition plus dur comparé à la saison 2. En outre, ils ont trouvé un certain nombre de joueurs forts ayant participé à la saison 2 afin de combler les trous dans leur liste. Cela rendait les autres équipes proie facile et Mirage perdait rapidement face à l’équipe «all-star». Les Grizzlys, quant à eux, perdraient face à Team Status eSports et se sont retrouvés dans la catégorie des perdants. Uganda Trihard a battu Team Status eSports dans la finale des gagnants, ce qui les placerait dans la grande finale du tournoi Overwatch, pour affronter le vainqueur des Grizzlys contre Team Status. Les Grizzlys ont vaincu Team Status et se sont qualifiés dans la grande finale contre Uganda Trihard dans ce qui semblait être une série intense de <best of 5>.
En regardant l’ensemble des deux équipes, la grande finale était essentiellement une bataille entre les champions MOL de la saison 1 contre les champions MOL de la saison 2. Les <map> était avant et en arrière avec Uganda Trihard commençant les meilleures de 5 avec un avantage de 1 match. La première carte, Népal, les Grizzlys ont gagné de manière convaincante pour égaler la série 1-1. Une autre paire de cartes (Route66 et Lijiang Tower) s’est divisée entre les deux équipes et la série était 2-2 avec Numbani étant la carte décisive. Uganda Trihard a débuté en défense et a résisté jusqu’au premier point sans donner de chance aux Grizzlys de l’obtenir. Les Grizzlys devraient monter une défense tout aussi incroyable s’il voulon prolonger le jeu. Malheureusement pour eux, il a fallu exactement 43 secondes à Uganda Trihard pour abattre les Grizzlys dans le premier point et les limiter pour remporter la victoire en tant qu’équipe numéro 1 du tournoi Overwatch avec le prix de 3,500$.
C’était un week-end de rêve pour Uganda Trihard, qui est entré dans le tournoi avec peu de pratique, étant formé seulement quelques jours avant l’événement. Ils sont venus à l’événement, en mettant en valeur leur talent et en prouvant à tout le monde qu’ils avaient les compétences pour être en concurrence avec des équipes qui avaient joué ensemble depuis bien plus longtemps qu’eux. Cette année, le tournoi du Lan ETS Overwatch a été touché par quelques retards mineurs tout au long du weekend, mais il a conclu avec une grande finale intense et divertissante.

LAN ETS 2018: Overwatch
For the second year in a row Lan ETS hosted an Overwatch tournament that took place at Place Bonaventure. The tournament was a much smaller affair than last year’s event and had a prize pool of $5,000. This year there were 24 teams split into 4 pool groups, with the top 2 teams in each group advancing to the Best of 3 double-elimination playoffs. All eyes were on the bigger Montreal based organizations, such as the newly acquired Grizzlys Overwatch team, formerly known as Rivals Gaming, Mirage Sport Electronique, and Crysix. The Grizzlys had recently won the Montreal Overwatch League (MOL), and were hands on favourites to win it all before the tournament began.
The Grizzlys went on to crush their group and find themselves in the playoff bracket, first facing Saints Gaming Overwatch, former opponents from the MOL that would attempt to work their way through the bracket and get a second chance at taking down Grizzlys. On the other side we saw strong teams like Uganda Trihard, which featured the strongest individual talent in the tournament such as Roody, a player well known for his skills on Pharah, and The Plug, a top 20 player on the North American leaderboards. Grizzlys then beat Saints Gaming to make their way to the semi-finals, where they’d face Team Status eSport, a team that just took out PsykoPaths Gaming. Meanwhile, Uganda Trihard would take an easy 2-0 against Transcendence to move into the semi-finals, against Mirage.
Uganda Trihard was made up of members from the Season 1 MOL champions which had, arguably, a tougher field of competition compared to Season 2. Additionally, they found a number of strong players that participated in Season 2 to fill the holes in their roster. This made other teams easy pickings and Mirage would take a quick loss to the “all-star” team. Grizzlys on the other hand would lose to Team Status eSports, and they’d find themselves working through the losers bracket. Uganda Trihard beat out Team Status eSports in the winners finals, and that would place them in the grand finals of the Overwatch tournament, to face the winner of Grizzlys against Team Status. The Grizzlys would redeem themselves against Team Status and claw their way into the the grand finals against Uganda Trihard in what looked to be an intense best of 5 series.
Looking at the rosters from both teams, the grand final was essentially a battle between the Season 1 MOL champions against the Season 2 MOL champions. The maps went back and forth with Uganda Trihard starting the Best-of-5 with a 1 game advantage. The first map, Nepal, the Grizzlys won convincingly to tie up the series 1-1. Another pair of maps (Route66 & Lijiang Tower) split between both teams and the series was 2-2 with Numbani to be the title deciding map. Uganda Trihard started out on defense and would hold out the first point without giving so much of a chance for the Grizzlys to cap it. The Grizzlys would have to mount an equally incredible defense of their own if they were to bring this game to overtime. Unfortunately for them, it took Uganda Trihard precisely 43 seconds to mow down the Grizzlys on the first point and cap it to claim victory as the number 1 team in the Overwatch tournament along with the $3,500 prize.
It was a dream weekend for Uganda Trihard, who came into the tournament with barely any practice, being formed only a few days prior to the event. They came into the event, showcasing their talent and proving to everyone that they had the skills to compete against teams that had been playing together for much longer than them. This year. the Lan ETS Overwatch tournament was hit with a few minor delays throughout the weekend but ultimately delivered an intense and entertaining grand final.
