LAN ETS 2018: SSBM

La foule encourageraient The Warrior.

LAN ETS 2018: SSBM

With one of the most passionate fan bases ever for a fighting game, Lan ETS presented the always exciting Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament. Despite the game being over 16 years old, players are still playing, competing and optimizing their craft. In this tournament we had some of Montreal’s finest, with players such as Morks, Spicy Hungarian and Legend, as well as the up and comer Georges breaking into top 8. Of course the 2 favorites and the ones everybody in the bracket had to look out for, being Ryan Ford and Kage the Warrior, the 2 veterans of Canadian Melee . With some stiff competition and unpredictable outcomes, it was surely going to be a tournament to remember.

Both sides of loser’s eights would share an eerily similar outcome, both matches resulting in a reverse 3-0! Spicy Hungarian (Peach) and Marko (Falco) would go against the odds in their respective loser’s matches, pushing to game 5 and keeping their bracket run alive with some close 3-2 victories. Winner’s would see no close sets as both sides of winner’s semis saw the favorites Ryan Ford (Fox) and Kage (Ganondorf) dominate there matches 3-0. Ryan Ford only losing 2 stocks in the whole set and Kage with a strong showing against one of Montreal’s best; Legend (Jigglypuff).

Damian Tyson (Fox) and Marko met in loser’s quarters and we were given a showstopping set that left the audience guessing. It was Marko’s perseverance that pushed to a game 5 where he busted out all his best combos to take the set. While on the other side we would see a differently paced match with a much more methodical set between Hungarian and Legend. The nature of the match up forced them to take it slow and respect each other’s approaches, but Legend would win the war of attrition with a 3-0. If that was a bit slow for your liking, Legend would go absolutely crazy with Jigglypuff rests in Loser’s semis against Marko, with each match lasting less than  3 minutes! There would be no superhuman comeback from Marko this time around, as Legend was set to push on to loser’s finals with a quick 3-0.

Winner’s Finals

This would be Ryan Ford and Kage’s second Lan ETS winner’s finals encounter as they did face each other in the finals of Lan ETS 2016. And as the first and second seed of this bracket it was no surprise to see them here again. While Kage has not had the best set record against Ryan Ford, this would definitely be the stage to take him down. Ryan started out with a strong game, using Fox’s superior speed to keep the much slower Ganon constantly out of breath. Game 2 would see it go to the wire with both player well over 100% on their last stocks. the crowd was firmly behind The Warrior. However, Ryan would shut down those cheers with a clean back air, only taking out his opponents last stock at 187%. Game 3 would see another nail biting last hit situation, with Ryan clutching it out by exploiting Ganon’s vulnerable recovery with an off stage shine. Ryan would take a 3-0 on paper, but it was really a set that could have gone either way.

Loser’s Finals

A rematch from winner’s semis would see Legend claw back from loser’s to take on Kage once again. Even though Legend has taken sets off Kage in the past, he just just didn’t quite have the answer today. For the most part, it seemed to be a repeat of there winner’s semi encounter. Every hit from Kage hurt, with the frustration visabley present on Legend’s face with each powerful blow. While Legend’s off stage game was incredible, Jigglypuff’s extremely light body made for very early stocks taken from Falcon’s powerful knee. We would again see an another 3-0 from Kage.

Grand Finals

The final bout was set for the 2 best Melee players at Lan ETS. This would surprisingly be the first grands for the Kage the Warrior on this stage and he would not have an easy task, going up against his rival, Ryan Ford. Game 1 saw fantastic execution from Ryan, as his absolutely overwhelming offence did not give Kage a chance to breathe. Stocks were ripped away as Fox’s shine just bullied Ganondorf off stage. After a solid 3 stock, Ryan Ford would make the switch to Falco for the first time all tournament. Perhaps to toy with Kage? Whatever the reason, it would continue his winning streak as he would take that close game 2. And despite being down 2 games, Kage did not seem to be too shaken. In fact both players looked happy to be on this grand finals stage, laughter could be seen from each exchange. In game 3, Kage would get some revenge as he was able to get some clean edge guards of his own to stop the falco in his tracks and deliver Ryan Ford his first lost of the tournament. Looking to end this tournament there and now, he would switch back to Fox and take the next game in convincing fashion, with a solid 3 stock. With this impressive victory, $1,145 would go in his pocket and Ryan Ford would become a second time Lan ETS Melee Champion.
